Pet peeve of the evening:

..., he thought to himself.

Who else are you thinking to, man? Who else could that perambulatory clause/phrase have possibly been aimed at?

No one. Hot damn. So why have I read this so often that my mind jumps to writing 'he thought to himself' instead of just 'he thought', or instead of, maybe, just leaving the thought attribution off altogether? I dunno, but it keeps me up at night. Or maybe it just keeps me writing this post instead of the last 800 words of tonight's quota.
